What is facelift surgery?

Facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure intended to eliminate age-related facial sagging and wrinkles with the stretching and suspension techniques. However, in recent years, all interventions related to the treatment of facial aging have begun to be called under the name of facial rejuvenation. Facial aging may develop in four different categories as aging of the skin, melting of subcutaneous fat tissue, formation of facial expression lines, and sagging of the face. The problems listed like this can be eliminated by the facelift procedure.

Are you a suitable candidate for facelift?

Individuals whose face and neck skin has begun to sag but has not completely lost its elasticity and who do not have any other health problems are ideal candidates for facelift. Face lift is usually performed on men and women over 40 years of age. However, due to structural and genetic reasons, this type of surgical procedures can also be performed completely or limitedly at earlier ages. Rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, forehead lift, brow lift surgeries can also be added during facelift surgery, with intent to enable the face to look more beautiful and younger. Therefore, your examination to be performed by your surgeon is of great importance.

How do you notice sagging on your face?

*If you have sagging skin or vertical lines on your neck,

*If you have droopy eyebrows

*If the fold between the edge of the nose and the edge of the mouth has become more noticeable

*If there is sagging skin on both sides of your chin, which disrupt the contour, it can be easily said that your facial skin has begun to sag.

What are the types of facelift?

The way of performing the facelift procedure varies depending on the needs of the patient. These are as follows:

Midface Lift: It is the type of facelift procedure that should be performed only in cases where the cheek area alone droopy while there is no sagging skin on the face. This procedure is intended to put back the lost soft tissue, move the sagging structures upwards, and recover the impaired relation between the lower eyelid and the cheek. The rejuvenation procedures that can be performed in this region can be listed as lower blepharoplasty, endoscopic mid-facelift, mid-facelift procedures on the lower eyelid, suture suspension of mid-face, fat injections, and filling.

Mini Face Lift: It is the type of face lift procedure that should be preferred in cases where the flabbiness in middle face is a little bit more noticeable. With just a short incision made in front of the ear, the corners of the cheek and mouth are pulled up. People between 40 and 50 years of age, who do not have weight problems and much sagging skin, can be a suitable candidate for this surgical procedure.

Full Facelift: It is the type of more comprehensive face lift procedure that involves the rejuvenation of the upper, middle and lower face regions at the same time. It is often performed on patients over 50 years of age. Blepharoplasty and fat injection procedures can be performed in addition to full facelift. If deemed necessary, peeling procedures can also be performed on the skin. It is of great importance to preserve the characteristic structure of the patient after this procedure, and to ensure that the patient and his social circle will not feel uneasy about the result.

Preoperative Period

If the patient who will have a face lift operation is a smoker, he/she should stop smoking at least 2 weeks before the date of surgery. Since smoking causes skin losses and suture dehiscence, it can make facelift surgery extremely risky. Therefore, we recommend patients to stop smoking at least 3 weeks before the operation, in order to minimize the post-operative risks. Aspirin or other similar blood thinners should be discontinued 10 days before the date of surgery.

Surgical Process

Since face lift is a comprehensive surgical procedure, we prefer performing it under general anesthesia. Mini facelift operations, on the other hand, can be performed under local anesthesia. Depending on the extent of the surgical intervention to be applied, the operation takes take 3 to 4 hours. Although it is possible to be discharged the same day after surgery, a 1-night hospital stay is would be useful. The drains placed to discharge the blood are removed within 2 to 3 days. If the sutures are not self-dissolving, they are removed on the 5th day.

Postoperative Period

The early stage after surgery is generally experienced comfortably. There may be a general swelling, bruising, the feeling of numbness, and tension in the face. Because the facial nerves may be affected by anesthesia during the surgery, there may be slight asymmetries in the face. These disappear spontaneously within 3-5 days. Postoperative edema and bruises on the face may last 7 to 10 days. In this period, cold gels and bandages can be applied.

After the 2nd postoperative day, the patient can stand up and do his/her housework. Once the swelling disappear after 1 week, the patient can return to work and put on make-up. The patient should avoid strenuous exercises and direct sunlight for a period of 2 months, should protect his/her face from external impacts.

Although it is possible to notice the result to a certain extent immediately after the operation, the resolution of the postoperative edema on the face and the emergence of the final shape starts in the 3rd week and becomes clear after the 2nd month. During this period, it would be useful to have lymph drainage massage. If there are any other facial rejuvenation procedures that must be performed, they can be started after the 3rd week.

Is the Result of the Procedure Permanent?

The gains that the patient has achieved as a result of facelift surgery are permanent. However, it should be remembered that time keeps flying. Therefore, it is possible for the person to feel rejuvenated by 5-15 years.
