What is liposuction procedure?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure intended to remove fat deposits in certain regions by sucking them out of the body with the help of a special vacuum or special syringes. As a result of the developing technology, laser and ultrasonic techniques have been added to liposuction in order to achieve better results.

Why is liposuction performed?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure performed to slim down certain regions of the body, which contain excess fat deposits that cannot be burnt even by losing weight. Although it is performed to slim down certain regions of the body, it is not appropriate to have it only for the purpose of losing weight. In addition, it can also be performed as a part of the procedure called liposhaping (fat shaping). Liposhaping consists of the combination of the liposuction and fat injection processes.

Surgical Process

The operation is performed under the observation of an anaesthesiologist, in an operating room and under hospital conditions.  A combination of local anesthesia and sedation (intravenous anaesthesia) is preferred. Only local anesthesia can be applied to very limited, small areas. Duration of the operation ranges between one and five hours, depending on the site to be vacuumed. The patient can be discharged from the hospital on the same day or after 24 hours, depending on the extent of the operation.

Postoperative Period

The postoperative pain is very mild and can be eliminated with medication. A special bandage is applied to the vacuumed area and the patient wear a special corset after the operation. Care should be taken to ensure that the corset worn does not constantly remain folded in the same place. Purplish discoloration may occur in the vacuumed areas. There may be swelling, tingling, and burning sensation, but these disappear spontaneously within a period of 3 weeks. Surgical scars become hardly visible within 2 to 6 months.
