What is Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

Although the perception of beauty that differs from society to society has changed over the centuries, the facial area continues to be the most noticeable part of the body, and an indispensable beauty criterion. Therefore, structural defects and deformities in the face area are very important to the patient visually, aesthetically, and psychologically in particular.

Thanks to the developments in the field of medicine and technology and the innovative surgical methods that have been offered in recent years, rhinoplasty operations can now be performed more easily compared to the past. In addition, since the new surgical procedures are more advanced compared to those available 10-15 years ago, rhinoplasty operations are now so comfortable.

Patients can now recover faster and return to their daily life and work in a short time after plastic surgery operations. They also experience less postoperative problems. One of these innovative surgical techniques is ultrasonic rhinoplasty. Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is a technique used to cut the nasal bone with millimetric precision, without damaging the nasal bone and the soft tissue around it, with micro motor systems using very fine pen-like instruments.

How Is Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty Performed?

Tools used to cut the nasal bones in other surgical procedures, such as hammer or chisel, are not used in the ultrasonic rhinoplasty technique. Using only ultrasonic sound waves, the bone in the nose structure is cut and corrected with precision.

This technique causes no bleeding during the operation, because it does not damage the soft tissues and vascular structures around the nasal bone, and the capillaries in the nose structure remain intact. Compared to other surgical rhinoplasty techniques, it causes no or very mild bruising or swelling after surgery.

Piezo rhinoplasty allows for a more comfortable rhinoplasty process for both physician and patient. It enables patients to go through the recovery period more easily and faster. This surgical procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.

How is the Preoperative Process?

Before the Rhinoplasty operation, the physician conducts a detailed interview with the patient, and throughly examines the inner and outer parts of the nose with endoscopic devices. The physician takes photos of the face from different angles and studies the shape of the nose on these photos, discusses the possibilities and the surgical process with the patient in detail, and makes the surgery planning accordingly. The physician also requests the necessary medical tests, and examines the patient to know his/her general health status before the operation.

How Long Does the Surgery Take?

Since ultrasonic rhinoplasty is a procedure that involves the cutting of the nasal bone with millimetric precision, it requires great attention. Duration of an ultrasonic rhinoplasty operation varies depending on the severity of the problems in the patient, but it takes 3 to 4 hours on average.

How is Its Postoperative Process?

Patients experience no or mild swelling and bruising immediately after the operation, depending on their own condition. Slight swelling and bruising may develop or increase on the 2nd and 3rd postoperative days. In these days, if ice is applied to the eye contour area at 15-minute intervals, the bruising and swelling decrease. During this application, it is very important to protect the plaster on the nose.

Nasal packings placed into the nose are removed after 2 to 4 days on average. The suture on the columellar base and the plaster outside the nose are removed within a week or when the physician deems appropriate. However, usually nothing remains except the patient’s nose after two weeks.

The patient can take a bath after the removal of the plaster and bandage outside the nose. the patient can return to work and social life about 3 to 4 weeks after the operation, but he/she should still avoid excessive physical activities (such as swimming, jogging, cycling) after this period.

The patient should not wear glasses and should avoid sunbathing for a period of 3 to 6 months after surgery.  In addition, the nose should be protected from impacts such as taking a blow to it or hitting it to some object, especially in the first year after surgery. The patient should go for postoperative checkups at regular intervals determined by the physician.

Is There Any Age Limit for Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

Any individual over 18 years of age can have this procedure, if his or her general health condition as well as face and nose structures are found to be anatomically suitable by the physician after a detailed examination and interview.

What are the Surgical Risks of Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

As with all surgical procedures, ultrasonic rhinoplasty may carry some risks, as well. These risks include postoperative bleeding, asymmetry, nasal deformity due to shift, infection, adhesions or the development of allergies. When the surgery is performed by an experienced specialist physician, these risks decrease but cannot be completely eliminated.
